This door made of leather scraps and nailheads is a DIY work of art

I mean…what!!! I did a double take at first. I thought maybe it was a nice wallpaper pattern but after reading about Meredith Carmichael’s home on Our Style Stories, I realized it was made from leather scraps and nailheads. How creative. A little patience, creativity and old fabric samples will do that huh?

image

Then after paying attention to the door I noticed the malachite upholstered chair. Pretty cool. See more malachite here.

Marble and tiled floors in living and bedrooms…

When I think of this…Miami penthouses come to mind. Could you really feel comfortable in a space without carpeting or a soft rug to cushion your feet?

image

image

Although the look is nice and probably not nearly as many dust mites that carpeted surfaces have, I would rather have tiled spaced be limited to bath, kitch and entryways. Give me wood and rugs.

Difference between Oriental and Persian plus Over dyed rugs….

I appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into hand woven Oriental and Persian rugs. Oriental rugs are carpets hand knotted only in Asia with traditional Buddhist motifs and a common colors of blue, red, apricot and yellow. While Persian rugs are made in Iran and you can see the design on front and bottom of rug. Styles range from traditional geometrics to more contemporary patterns with vibrant color. Persian rugs are said to have the finest or highest quality of all oriental style carpets but both Oriental and Persian rugs increase in value over time…

image

With that said, I’m more of a fan of Persian rugs because of the color. I like to see them when they’re on display and the focal point. I also like when a traditional rug is a modern vibrant shade. This mustard rug is very pretty to me. I just wish the walls had a mocha color to them to create warmth…

image

Which brings me to my current obsession: the over dyed rugs…

image

image

image

I like the monochromatic look of various blues. When you use the same color throughout, you need to create textures or different shades of the color to prevent it from being stale. You can snatch out hues from an over dyed rug and use those colors for furniture and decor. The rug will keep it all tied together…

You can purchase some from this collage on Open Sky & Wanelo. The chartreuse and magenta one is my fav. As always, check BBB when making online purchases from unfamiliar companies.

Reflections in Octagon mirrors..

I saw an octagon wood framed mirror at the Goodwill. I think it was $9. It wasn’t a need. I had a pretty decent amount of stuff in my cart so I left it. It was rather heavy and that turned me off even though it was a good size, the thought of hanging it would be a bit difficult. I kind of regret it. I could have painted the wood a metallic hue or glossy black to update the look. Instead I left it….

image

{via}
Love this entry/hall styling. It doesn’t take much room but there is a spot for removing wet boots, dropping off a bag and checking yourself out one last time before leaving.

image

If you want to give an old dresser a new look…consider replacing the mirror that came with it and hanging two decorative mirrors instead…

So what do you think? Do you prefer round, starburst, rectangular or octagon shaped mirrors?

Chairish: a vintage furniture and accessories store

I have been challenged to pick some vintage pieces from Chairish to create a styleboard featuring one of my favorite picks. I loved the vintage Persian Bidjar rug and decided to make a few styleboards around that rug. Then I ended up spending a bunch of hours lost on their website in a black hole of beautiful goodies that made me wish I were rich. I swear there is so much good stuff being sold on that site. Basically Chairish is a site where people can buy and sell vintage decor, furniture and art. The items are carefully curated and it has an etsy/ebay feel where you’re buying from trustworthy sources and owners.

image

So I started compiling pieces and end up creating four different styleboards. The first I envisioned in a corner of a bedroom. You have the armoire and a chair with a lamp to create a nice reading nook. Next I created a sideboard styled area of a living room. I love how the styling is asymmetrical but still feels balanced by the wall sconces. You could even sit a flat screen tv there for an updated more stylish version of tv stands. See more of that here. This board has an eclectic feel…

image

Then I had to create something girly and glam with a blush pink palette, mirrored and lucite finishes & a pop of gold. This would be a pretty entryway area that is sure to set the tone of anyone who comes in for the first time. You have a pouf to sit on and take shoes off after a long day of work, a mirrored screen to check your hair one last time before stepping out and a place for keys. I added the bust and vintage sign for a little whimsy.

image

Lastly using the same vintage Persian rug, I styled a sitting area. I forgot to include a coffee table but if I did, I would pick something with glass so that you can see and appreciate the beauty of the rug. There are some Asian influences in this space with the color scheme, the brass fretwork wall sconces and the contemporary Asian latticework buffet. So which styleboard do you like the most? Every single item with the exception of plants were found on Chairish.

Selling Your Home: The Natural Rules

$
0
0

image
If you’re in the process of selling your home, you’ll have probably read countless articles giving you “ten tips” or something similar on how to maximize your sale price.
image
Our advice is going to be a little different and instead concentrate on a set of “natural rules” – which aim to entice buyers by simply making the most of your home’s natural make-up.
image

We’re certainly not advocating a sledgehammer approach here – in fact, the biggest investment probably arrives through a new set of blinds. What we’re trying to highlight is that by keeping things simple, and ultimately staying natural, your property can become much more desirable to the typical viewer. Here are our three tips on how to achieve this:

image

Tip #1 – Natural light will be your best friend

This is perhaps the best tip you can follow when it comes to selling your home; natural light really will be your best friend. We’re not quite sure of the science, but allowing as much natural light to flow into your house will immediately trick any eye into thinking that it’s bigger than it really is. As we know, at least in the world of property, bigger usually results in costlier.
image

So, how do you achieve the above? Opting for blinds over curtains is the most advisable course of action, and investing in a set that will allow optimum amounts of natural light into the building at every point of the day should also be done. When it comes to viewing time, ensuring that they’re either open or at least adjusted to the point of allowing maximum light into the property, should again do the trick.

image

Tip #2 – Take advantage of the natural views

If you’re lucky enough to be surrounded by natural beauty, opening your home up to the views is another sure-fire way to impress any potential buyer. This is again an instance where blinds truly can be a saviour, particularly following recent developments in the industry.
image

The emergence of top-down bottom-up blinds means that you can protect a home’s privacy, whilst also allowing plenty of natural light to enter the room at the same time. The fact that you can perfectly balance privacy and views through these sorts of inventions makes life much easier for the seller now.
image

Tip #3 – Natural materials also work wonders

The previous tips have concentrated on what we see around us, but staying natural doesn’t have to only revolve around this. This final suggestion revolves around using natural materials in our home. In today’s age, it can be a lot easier to opt for synthetic replacements – with manufacturers keen to push products that are made to look like the “real deal”, but are in fact a cheaper copy.
image

This could be anything from laminated floors to faux wood blinds – they both look the part to an extent, but they don’t have the same “wow” factor that real wood possesses. As well as this, any buyer will be sure to consider the maintenance issues and most of the time, these synthetic alternatives are much less durable which could result in heftier replacement costs in the future.
image

Of course, it’s not always possible to invest in “real” and natural materials. However, if your budget allows, at least for the most prominent areas of the property such as the windows, it might be advisable to push the boat out.

Decorating with benches…

image

I purchased a wood bench from TJ Maxx with every intention on using it for dining seating. I love the idea of a dining table with a casual bench side. Then I end up purchasing a bar height curved triangle dining table and 2 bar height curved benches. I was going to return the lower bench but decided to keep it. So now I’m debating where I want to put it and how I want to style it. I don’t need it in the entry way because I already have a console table for that but since moving into my condo last week, I don’t quite yet have a kitchen table or chairs. So to fill up the area in front of the patio doors, I thought it could go there with a furry sheepskin rug on top.

image

My bench is a little long but there are so many areas you can squeeze a small bench into. If you don’t have a mudroom, you can always put hooks over a bench and create a resting stop for the entry way to take off shoes or drop your bags…

image

image

You can always put them at the edge of the bed to rest your decorative pillows while you sleep…

image

If you have a cushion, you can always put that on top and have the bench serve as additional seating in a smaller area…kind of like an ottoman. You could place it on a stairway landing, in front of a window as a reading nook window seat or behind a sofa as a low console table.

Have you seen Zara Home’s new lookbook?

One thing that can describe Zara Home’s new lookbook is tailored comfort. The bedding is classic and the colors are very neutral. What I like most is how the lookbook is styled and shot. The backdrops especially are very beautiful. I found some gems I will do a collage about soon.

My introduction to Arhaus…

image

I meant to post about my first introduction to the Arhaus showroom a couple months ago but forgot. I was in Shaumburg, Illinois at the Woodfield Mall heading to another store when store windows captured my eye. Everything was so glamorous and dramatic. The lighting was moody and gave this deep glow everywhere. I felt like I was in furniture heaven.

image

Then Jayson approached us. He was incredibly knowledgable about the products and even went as far as to rearrange some showroom pieces so I could get a better vision on what I had in mind.

image

I think I even mentioned that the pieces were out of my price range and he could have easily left me alone to approach other customers, but he didn’t. Even when one rude lady interrupted us to ask him a question and even tried to take him toward the area she needed help in, he politely informed her that he would finish up with us first before helping her. I was stunned as I never get that quality of service. Unfortunately some salespeople assume what customers will spend money based on appearance and even race. I’m a designer and though I was looking for myself, I could have been shopping for a client. Often times my experience in a store determines where I spend my client’s money. In college, one of my instructors told us if we ever design or work in a showroom, to treat all people equally. You never know who is sitting on money! In his experience, the most casual dressers ended up being the ones to spend a lot. So I appreciated Jayson’s professionalism during that time.

Some of my favorite lighting by them…and a fab mirror!

What I like about some of the pieces at Arhaus is the craftsmanship of the furniture. The distressing and carving in some of their furniture is all done by hand by Italian artisans to make each piece feel as if it has history.  They are having an annual storewide sale 20-40% off so you may want to check them out. No this isn’t a sponsored post, I just really like what they have to offer and can’t wait to make my first purchase.

Luxurious and grand…

Hello! I am doing a voice text blog post since I am still recovering from Wednesday’s hand surgery. I am supposed to keep my hand elevated so it’s a good thing I always have my phone in my hand. I came across this living room on Pinterest and it linked back to a page that I can’t translate. I’m not sure if all of the images are from the same home or hotel but they are all beautiful. I love when a really spacious room is filled with the right scaled furniture and artwork…

If you have small artwork or prints simply frame them with a large mat to make a bigger impact. If you have a large area to fill, use smaller nesting tables in replace of a coffee table…

An update to my home….

If you follow along on instagram, you may have noticed my console table area has gotten a new look. See the before here. It starting feeling cluttered and I wanted to find ways to simplify the look. My bar cart is near there so I didn’t want two surfaces with a lot of stuff on them. When I purchased the abstract skyline piece from AtHome, I decided to move around some of the decor and remove some photos from the wall. I think the look now feels fresh.

Here is a view that gives you an idea of the height of the ceiling slope. When you have high ceilings, you want to ensure you purchase large scale artwork to fill up some space…
